Water Based Wood Stain
Water based wood stains on floors do not look good. Hardwood floors are usually hard wearing and can last for generations. Water can damage floors. Trees grow most during the warmest months of the year. When the weather gets colder the tree has a slow growth period which creates the annual rings. The slow period provides resistance to fungus and insect attacks. All hardwood contains water. A living tree can be made up of 90 percent of water by weight. Once a tree is cut down the moisture content drops immediately. Depending on outside humidity the moisture content can drop as low as 8 percent. Boards are kiln dried to reduce moisture and kill fungi. Fungi can not grow if moisture is very low. Pressure treatment resists rot and termite damage. Rot is caused by fungi feeding on the boards. Moisture is essential for fungi growth. Damage Caused by Water Direct contact with water or high humidity will cause wood to absorb water, which will cause water based wood stains and cause rot. Fungi stain is visible as discoloration. It feeds at a very slow rate. Rot is caused by fungus. Moisture must be present for fungus to develop. This is why leaks of any kind on a floor should be taken care of immediately. You should check for leaking radiators or appliances regularly. Once the damage is done, it is too late to save the floor and it will have to be replaced. When washing a hardwood floor do not soak it, or leave it wet.
