To avoid this happening, you need to flush any cleaner out of the carpet fibers. Use a spray bottle and water. Blott up the moisture with paper towels. Do not over wet the carpet.

After the stain has been removed, place a stack of paper towels on the wet part of the carpet.

Weigh them down with something heavy, and leave overnight, to soak up the moisture. This will remove the stain while it is still fresh. Professional cleaning once a year will keep your carpets in top condition.
