Pet Urine Odor Removal
Pet urine odor removal from carpet is difficult, because of the strong smell.
Cat pee is acidic, and relatively free of bacteria. As it dries the urine turns into alkaline salts, where odor-causing bacteria live. Do not use vinegar on fresh urine, it will only make it worse. Adding vinegar makes makes urine more acidic which leads to more smelly bacteria. The alkaline salts absorb moisture from the air, causing more bacteria growth. If not properly cleaned the odor will lure the cat back to the same spot again and again. Cleaning Tips for Cat Urine
If you catch it while its fresh, its easier to clean up thoroughly. As soon as you notice it on the carpet, blot up as much as possible with paper towels. Lay layers of paper towels on the wet area, and add fresh paper towels as the urine gets soaked up. Wait until the area is barely damp, and then rinse with clean cold water. Soak up the water, if you have a shop vac, it works well, if not use paper towels. Try to dry up as much liquid as possible. Clean the area with enzymatic cleaner, which can be purchased at your local pet store. If the pet urine has been on the carpet for some time, it probably has spread down into the carpet backing and padding, and this may be a job for a professional. keep the cat away from the area until it is clean, dry,and odor free, which may take several days.
