Best Way to Clean Carpet

What is the best way to clean carpet? Many years ago, most homes had hardwood floors, but today almost every home has wall to wall carpet. The choices are steam cleaning also known as hot water extraction, or chemical dry cleaning.

Steam Cleaning

This is not really steam, it is hot water extraction with very hot water and cleaning detergent. The hot solution is forced into the carpet fibers, and extracted with a powerful vacuum.

The benefits are that the dirt and soil can be removed from deep down in the carpet fibers. Powerful equipment is needed to prevent the carpet from becoming over wet. It usually takes about two hours for the carpet to dry.

Done properly this method will remove the most dirt from the carpet. All of the cleaning solution will also be removed, which is important because left over residue, in the carpet fibers can attract dirt.

Chemical Dry Cleaning

With this method the carpet is sprayed with with a chemical that breaks down the soil. It is then buffed with a pad to pick up the dirt. Surface soil and stains are removed.

The problem is that deep down dirt and soil may not be removed. Deep down soil causes wear on the carpet and causes it to wear out more quickly. It is possible that some of the chemicals may be left in the carpet.

Many people have used the dry chemical cleaning method on their carpets and are happy with it. The biggest advantage is that the carpets do not get wet.
